Diabolical season 2 news isn’t good news

Published:

What started as a single show about evil, corrupt superheroes and the gruff do-gooders trying to stop them has expanded into an entire cinematic universe. The Boys may be airing its fifth and final season in 2026, but The Boys franchise isn’t going anywhere. In a recent interview with The Wrap, series showrunner Erik Kripke broke down the future of his various spinoffs. For fans of The Boys, it’s mostly good news, with one exception.

We’ll get to the bad news first. The Boys: Diabolical, the animated anthology set within The Boys universe, is apparently no more.

“I don’t think there’s going to be a Season 2 of Diabolical,” Kripke said. “It’s not for lack of us pushing. I think ultimately the viewer numbers weren’t there to justify a second season, sadly. Although, we love it and Simon [Racioppa], the showrunner, would be game to do it, but we haven’t gotten a go ahead on that.”

If you never watched Diabolical — and by the sound of it, there’s a good chance you didn’t — the eight-episode anthology gave various comedians a chance to experiment inside The Boys sandbox. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg made a Looney Tunes-style short about a super-powered infant titled “Laser Baby’s Day Out,” while everyone from Andy Samberg to Akwafina put their own twist on the franchise. Garth Ennis, the creator of the original The Boys comics, even wrote an episode, while another by Diabolical showrunner Simon Racioppa explored Homelander’s first days as a superhero.

It’s a shame that Diabolical, which pushed The Boys in surprising new directions, apparently failed to find its audience. The series was a clever response to critics who put down the flagship show for being overly violent and edgy while failing to move beyond its original concept. (We can all admit The Boys peaked with season 2, right?)

Then again, it’s not all bad news for fans of The Boys-verse. In the same The Wrap interview, Kripke said he already has a plan for Gen V season 3 (the spinoff series about a superhero university is currently wrapping up its second season). The same goes for Vought Rising, a prequel set in the 1950s. Season 1 is currently in production, and Kripke says he’s mapping out season 2 as we speak.

Finally, The Boys: Mexico is still in development. All we know about this one is that it’s being written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer and stars Gael García Bernal. Nevertheless, Kripke seems optimistic.

Mexico is just being developed right now,” he said. “The pilot script is being written. Gareth is a wonderful writer and I think it’s hilarious. I hope it gets made, but [it’s] just in that development phase.”

In other words, The Boys fans are eating well — it’s just a shame that the franchise’s most ambitious show won’t return.

The Boys: Diabolical is streaming on Prime Video.
