Hazbin Hotel creator Vivziepop says fans’ season 2 bingo cards will pay off

Published:

Season 2 of Vivienne Medrano’s adult animated musical series Hazbin Hotel launches on Prime Video this week, and speculation has been running high. Season 1 introduces a large cast based of characters living in Hell and Heaven, sets them against each other (with periodic songs about their clash), and then builds the kinds of tense rivalries and angsty, affectionate connections that tend to drive fan obsession. The fandom’s stated hopes for season 2 vary widely, but certain threads emerge over and over: Will Angel Dust escape his tormentor Valentino? Will we find out more about the “deal” constraining Alastor the Radio Demon? Will [favorite character] and [other character] finally get together?

“Obviously, I don’t make the show with fan service specifically in mind,” Medrano — also known online as Vivziepop — told Polygon earlier this year. “But I feel like me being a fan of my own show [means] there’s a lot of it just inherently. I also want to see these things, and I want some of these things to happen, and obviously some of these things are meant to happen in the show!”

Medrano says her big-picture plan is for five seasons of Hazbin Hotel. Seasons 3 and 4 have already been green-lit by Prime Video and A24, which produce the series. That might mean fans have to wait years for some of the biggest payoffs — but they may be surprised at how fast season 2 moves, and how much of what they’re waiting for happens this season.

“I feel like people are going to get a lot out of it,” Medrano says. “We get some firsts. I think we get some really amazing reveals, some really cool backstories, and even just simple things, [like] I hope this character gets a song. […] We’re going to hear much more singing from the characters we didn’t get to hear before.”

She’s certainly aware of the guesses and hopes about season 2 — especially in the format of fan bingo cards.

“I’ve seen a couple people make a bingo card about season 2,” she says. “Obviously I can’t post it, but I’ve actually done some of them, and almost all of them have almost a bingo. I was like, Oh, if you put this [event] in this spot, it would be a bingo. So that leads me to believe we do a lot [of what fans are waiting for in this season], because I was like, Oh, there’s multiple potential bingos on this card. So that makes me happy.”

Hazbin Hotel season 2 launches on Prime Video on Oct. 29.
