Proof that young children should never be left unattended. In Vietnam, a father who owns a component repair store lost a whole batch of SSD after his 10-year-old son had fun folding them one after the other. When you know the market trend, it’s enough to make you cringe!
At the age of 10, he ruined 50 SSDs!
A sad end for this batch of 50 Samsung PM991A 512GB SSDs, completely bent by the owner’s 10-year-old son. While some of the SSDs in the lot may still work, sadly, given their appearance, they’re unmarketable… Perhaps they can still be used for internal testing, but without much hope. It has to be said that an M.2 2280 SSD aspires to be mounted on a motherboard, flat, the whole attached to a spacer. The thin PCB that makes it up remains fragile and easy to deform, as can be seen here.
As for the rest, it’s simple: it’s off to the e-waste garbage can for those units that can’t be salvaged. As it is, it’s impossible for the repairer to hope for a return, let alone claim any warranty from the manufacturer. In this situation, Samsung will claim human error rather than accept any returns.
In this story, the old man ends up with a dry loss of over $3500 based on a realistic estimate for this reference. Unfortunately, it’s a model whose exact price is difficult to measure, since it’s aimed at the OEM market and isn’t sold in a retail version like a 970 Evo, for example.
We wish this repairer well. Once again, computer components are not toys… At least, not for small children.
