This is a decent mid-range processor with good hardware, and it supports DDR4 and DDR5 RAM, so you don’t need to buy new RAM and can use whatever you were previously using. However, DDR5 obviously has better performance and efficiency. That being said, it has enough under the hood to be able to complete the output of modern GPUs at lower resolutions, making it a great value option.

What we like about the i7-12700KF
- Cores: The Intel Core i7-12700KF features 12 cores, split between 8 performance and 4 efficient cores, and 20 threads. This is called the big.LITTLE architecture where the E-cores handle the minor tasks and don’t consume a lot of energy, while the P-cores come into play when a heavy workload needs to be taken care of, and after that, the E-cores take over again.
This gives the Intel processor performance and efficiency, and the 12700KF should deliver good productivity and gaming output. The only thing that you’ll need to take care of is pairing it with a discrete GPU since it doesn’t have integrated graphics, and the PC won’t boot without a GPU.
- Boost clock speed: The 12700KF can run at a maximum of 5.0 GHz, but Intel processors can be pushed far beyond their advertised limits, but we don’t recommend doing that. Running a CPU in a highly overclocked state can damage it, and you’ll also need to invest in a robust cooling solution to keep it from thermal throttling, but the increased power draw will still be an issue. That being said, the normal clock speed of this processor should be more than enough for daily tasks.
- Maximum memory capacity: This CPU is compatible with a maximum of 128GB RAM, the limit for DDR4 and DDR5 being 3200 MT/s and 4800 MT/s. However, you can easily use memory modules with much higher clock speeds as long as your motherboard supports that.
Should you get this processor?
The Intel Core i7-12700KF is a decent mid-range CPU and should be able to easily pair with modern GPUs like the RX 9070 XT or even high-end cards like the RTX 5080. Playing games at 1440p should be great, but it should also be able to keep up at 1080p, but the output might vary depending on the title. At 4K, even a budget processor can be paired with high-end graphics cards, so that shouldn’t be an issue for this processor. Overall, if you don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars on a new processor and want an option that can get the job done, the 12700KF is worth considering.
